How Does Sound Heal?

Through instruments (including voice), sound re-tunes, restores and balances the body through resonant vibrations and frequencies. In my February 1st blog, I talked about how sound is a bridge between science and religion and that sound creates form. How exactly does it do that? And how does that impact the human body?

Of course, we cannot see sound, but we can see and feel the effects of sound. Cymatics is the science of โ€œmaking sound vibration visible.โ€ Cymatics researcher John Stuart Reid says that โ€œthe provenance of Cymatics can be traced back at least 1000 years to African tribes who used the taut skin of drums sprinkled with small grains to divine future events.โ€

Modern cymatics stems from the groundbreaking and pioneering work of several scientists. Their methods were simple. They put substances like liquids, powders, or pastes on a metal or glass plate and vibrated the plate surface with different frequencies. These materials would then form intricate and often mesmerizing geometric patterns.

Here are interesting examples.

ยท Leonardo Da Vinci (d-1519) noticed that dust on a vibrating wooden table formed interesting shapes.

ยท Galileo Galilei (d-1642) scraped a brass plate with a chisel and saw the filings create โ€˜long rows of fine streaks, parallel and equidistant from one another.โ€™

ยท Robert Hooke (1635-1703) of Oxford University observed patterns form on a glass plate covered with flour when he โ€˜playedโ€™ the plate with a violin bow.

ยท Ernst Chladni (1756-1827) a German musician and scientist, used a sand-strewn brass plate, also excited by a violin bow. A large variety of geometric patterns appeared and changed as he played the bow on different edges of the plate.

ยท Michael Faraday, (1791-1867) an English chemist and physicist, created โ€˜crispations,โ€™ which were the effects of vibration on water, oil, and fine grains.

ยท Margaret Watts-Hughes (d-19th07) a Welsh woman, experimented with a device she invented in 1885 and named the โ€˜Eidophone.โ€™ Her invention consisted of a wooden resonating chamber with an open end across which was stretched a rubber membrane, strewn with sand and other media. By singing into a tube that interfaced with the resonating chamber she was able to create โ€˜voice figures.โ€™

ยท Hans Jenny (1904-1972) a Swiss medical doctor and scientist meticulously recorded studies of substances like liquids, powders, or pastes on a metal plate which were vibrated with different frequencies.

Every cell in the human body vibrates. Just like the experiments above, cells can change their form depending on the sounds they encounter. The bodyโ€™s internal rhythm will align with the external rhythm produced by an instrument.

The vibrations from the instruments travel through the air to the body and are received by receptors on the skin. Sounds sink deep into the body and act like a massage on a cellular level. Cells respond by releasing stuck physical, emotional, or mental energy gently restoring them to their healthy state.

I have many types of instruments which โ€˜remindโ€™ the cells of their healthy frequencyโ€ and gently restore, balance, and harmonize the energy field.
