In a previous blog post, I explored why โWater Is Special in Sound Healing.โ But water is special and essential in many other ways. The quality of the water you pour into your glass can play an important role in your overall health.
The renowned martial arts master Bruce Lee once said:
โBe like water, making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it.โ
Why Water Draws Us In
Have you ever wondered why so many of us love walking along the ocean? Studies have shown that people who live near a body of water report 10 percent greater happiness levels. Researchers from the University of Exeter in England found that people living within a mile of the sea were 22 percent less likely to experience mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. Isnโt that incredible?
Simply being near these blue spaces, as scientists call them, can lift our mood. Marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols describes the deep sense of peace many people feel around water as our โblue mind.โ
Water gives us so much and teaches us just as much. Yet because it is part of everyday life, it is easy to take for granted. Still, we all know the relief of drinking cold, clear water when we are parched, or the joy of diving into a crystal-clear lake on a sweltering day.
Why Hydration Matters
We need H2O to survive. Without water, the body can last only a matter of days. Food is different: many people can go for weeks without eating, as long as they continue drinking enough water each day.
But to truly thrive, some experts recommend drinking more than the minimum: up to 15.5 cups of fluids per day for men and 11.5 cups per day for women.
What to Look for in Your Water
Pure, mineral-rich, clean water offers incredible benefits for the body and mind. When choosing drinking water, look for these qualities:
- Free of contaminants such as fungi, bacteria, and parasites.
- Rich in essential minerals such as sulfur, manganese, and calcium.
- Alkaline, with a pH above 7, which may offer added benefits.
Choosing a Better Source
So where can you find the highest-quality water to nourish your body? Spoiler alert: it may not come from your tap. Spring water, when sourced and stored safely, is one of the best options. This pure source of water, drawn straight from Mother Earth, can deliver many of the vital minerals our bodies crave.
Spring Water Safety Tips
Store spring water in food-grade containers and keep it in a cool, dark place. If the spring water is untreated or raw, make it safer before drinking by using one of these methods:
- Boil it.
- Filter it.
- Use a UV purifier.
- Add a very small amount of unscented bleach, following safe water-treatment guidance.
