Sound Creates a Bridge Between Religion and Science

Science and religion agree that sound is fundamental to creation. Letโ€™s look at some examples.

Christianity: The New Testament (NASB) teaches that God created the universe through His spoken word. John 1:1 states, โ€œIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.โ€ The heavens were formed by the โ€œbreath of his mouth.โ€ In John 1:3 โ€œAll things came into being through Him and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.โ€

Judaism: The Torah in Genesis 1:1-2:3, describes God creating all things in the universe through divine speech. โ€œIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. โ€ฆ Then God said, โ€˜Let there be lightโ€™ โ€ฆ sky, firmament, land, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, sea and winged creatures, land animals, man; male and female in His image.โ€ ย

Hinduism: The universe was created through the primordial sound โ€œOMโ€ or โ€œAUM.โ€ It is the โ€œBijaโ€ or seed mantra that created all other sounds, vibrations, and matter in the universe. โ€œAUMโ€ represents the three stages of existence: creation (A), preservation (U), and destruction (M).

Islam: Allah effortlessly creates everything instantaneously through the power of His word, โ€œBe (Kun), and it is.โ€ The six days of creation are detailed in the Qurโ€™an and Hadith. They are characterized by the divine command โ€œKun fa-yakunโ€ suggesting the power of God’s word in bringing existence into being. Quranic language has a profound resonant power. It is designed to be spoken and heard.

Buddhism/Jainism: There is no specific sound creation story because the universe is viewed as a continuous cyclical process of arising and passing away. However, sound is a catalyst for transformation. โ€œWords carry enormous power and energy that change reality depending on the qualities of the words. Sound vibration, especially chanting, is a means of spiritual creation and elevation.โ€

Ancient African and Oceanic religions often include creation myths where speech or songs play a crucial role in bringing the world into being.

Hermeticism is a philosophical tradition based on writings of Hermes Trismegistus, who blended ancient Greek and Egyptian wisdom. In the Corpus Hermeticum, particularly, the book, Poimandres, the universe was created through a divine vibrational โ€œWordโ€ or โ€œLogos.โ€ It is a โ€œsong the cosmos continually sings.โ€ It is an ongoing act of creation with the Word โ€œvibrating through all layers of existence,โ€ rather than just a one-time event.

Pythagoras (d.495 BC) in his โ€œMusic of the Spheres,โ€ proposed the foundational concept that the โ€œcreation and movement of the cosmos are ordered by divine, harmonious, mathematical ratios, which create a celestial symphony.โ€ โ€œThe planetary movements produce inaudible harmonic sounds based on these numerical proportions reflecting a purposefully designed universe.โ€

Johannes Kepler (d.1630) suggested that the universe was designed based on geometric and musical principles. โ€œThe Creator used harmonies of sound as a model for celestial motion. Therefore, heavenly motions are a continuous song. The planets sang a celestial intellectual melody corresponding to musical intervals, reflecting a divine geometric order.โ€ He did not believe this music to be audible but felt that the soul could nevertheless hear it.

Modern string theory, a branch of theoretical physics, states that ALL particles of matter consist of tiny vibrating strings which create and shape the tapestries of our universe and existence.

Religion and science acknowledge that sound and vibration are fundamental to the creation of all things. Thereby intricately connecting us to each other, the cosmos and the divine.
