Jin Shin Jyutsuยฎ is an ancient art that predates Moses and Buddha. It was rediscovered in Japan by Jiro Murai over one hundred years ago. The basic premise is that each finger has a channel of energy that corresponds to specific emotions and connects to organs and vertebrae. When we feel out of balance, the fingers can work like jumper cables. Gently holding them enables us to address various concerns and recharge ourselves, restoring a harmonious flow of energy.
THUMB. Hold the thumb when you experience the following: worry, depression, hate, anxiety, obsessiveness, headaches, and sleep difficulties. Since the thumb connects to the stomach and spleen, overall digestion can be improved along with easing stomach aches and pains. It is also a useful tool if you sit a great deal, as sitting creates bloating conditions. Holding it helps one build confidence, become centered, and foster love and compassion for others. When balanced you will feel secure and grounded.
INDEX FINGER. Hold the index finger when you are in a state of fear, uncertainty, shyness or feeling perfectionism or self-criticism. Physically it can help with teeth and gums, backaches, muscle tension, immunity, and constipation. The index finger connects to kidney and bladder functions and holding it alleviates discomfort in those areas. It is also useful for those who must stand on their feet for extended periods of time. When balanced, there is freedom from fear, which may aid in discovering your unique identity and destiny. Inner courage and the will to live are strengthened.
MIDDLE FINGER. Hold the middle finger if you find yourself consumed with anger, rage, frustration, irritability, aggression, or when things do not go your way. Physically, it can be beneficial for blood pressure, general fatigue, and eyes/vision. It is useful for those who read often. Since it connects to liver and gallbladder functioning, holding the middle finger stabilizes and improves those areas. It helps to move and convert โpent upโ energy into creativity and positive action. In balance, it improves our capacity for compassion.
RING FINGER. Hold the ring finger when you are overcome with sadness, grief, disappointment, negative thoughts, crying, or feelings of guilt. It is connected to the lungs and large intestine. If you need to increase breathing capacity, improve respiratory function or overall digestion, hold the ring finger. It is also useful for the skin conditions and times you must recline frequently due to convalescence. It boosts our sense of optimism that things WILL work out. It helps us realize we can let go of the things holding us back in life and move forward with strength. There is increased receptivity to โnewโ things.
LITTLE FINGER. Hold the little finger when you are nervous, insecure, overwhelmed by trying too hard, or struggling with the feeling of โlaughing on the outside but crying on the inside.โ Since it is connected to the heart and small intestine, it can aid heart discomfort/palpitations, and bloating. It heightens our awareness of inner joy and brightness. Living from our heart allows us to be faithful to our own truth, helping us restore simplicity, and serenity to life. In balance, inspiration and intuition are expanded.
PALM. Hold the palm if you feel despondency or fatigue. Chaos will be brought to order because holding the palm harmonizes our whole being on all levels. It restores equilibrium to every cell.

HOW TO: Relax your hands. Gently wrap each finger with the opposite hand for two to five minutes. There is no need to squeeze, rub or massage. Blocked energy will move. While holding each finger, breathe in deeply and allow yourself to acknowledge the emotions you feel no matter what they are. Breathe in a sense of harmony, strength, and healing. Exhale slowly and let the unwanted feelings and problems go. Imagine them draining out your finger, flowing deeply into the earth where they are absorbed and transmuted. A pulsing sensation may be felt as energy and feelings move into a state of balance. It works with either hand. Consistent daily practice will increase effectiveness and benefit.

It is a simple and unassuming process that can be done any time stress or strong emotions appear. It only takes a couple of minutes and is a useful tool when dealing with demanding situations. By practicing the technique, you will develop an understanding of how long you need to hold each finger to feel relief. Harmony will return to the body.
